Winter Outing Promotes Sport and Education

About 80 Young skating enthusiasts and parents from Chicago’s North Shore  and Skokie Public Library patrons took advantage of a special complimentary  program called an “Afternoon with Ice Skater Nicolette House” on January 7th,  2013 at the  Skokie Skatium.  The innovative program brought author Nicolette  House to her audience at the newly renovated award-winning Skatium facility at  9300 Weber Park Place in Skokie, Illinois.

Linda Sawyer of the Skokie Public library joined forces with Skatium Director  Kerry Murphy to hold the informational and recreational event where kids come  together to skate. The young skating enthusiasts not only had the opportunity to  listen to Ms. House talk about her popular book, Maddie Takes the Ice, but they also got to spend some time on the ice for a brief demonstration and a lot of fun. A display table gave the kids an up close look at some of Ms. House’s medals and skates. Traditionally, figure skaters are voracious readers as competition often involves a lot of down time that is perfectly filled with reading that can reduce stress and allow tired bodies to rest.

Nicolette House is a professional skater who represented Lithuania at the ISU European and World Figure Skating Championships. She is a four-time USFS gold medalist. Maddie Takes the Ice is middle grade novel that follows the exploits of a young skater’s competitive journey. Maddie offers up a great story with positive messages. In addition to her skating work, Ms. House is a professionally trained coach with a focus in mental skills coaching. She wants all athletes to perform their best and feel great about what they have accomplished. She is also the founder of IceTalent Inc, an online wellness publication for athletes.
