Skate Your Way Into the Holiday Season

If you’re like me, you’ve probably noticed the Christmas music playing on the radio,

the malls being decorated for the holidays, and commercials advertising awesome

Black Friday deals. And let’s face it- the holidays are right around the corner. Bet

they snuck up on you, didn’t they? Thanksgiving is next week and I don’t even know

what I’m cooking! Oh yeah, turkey.

Anyway, with the holidays fast approaching it’s easy to get into a festive spirit and away from serious training. But you know what? That’s okay.  Sectionals just wrapped up. Congratulations to those moving on to Nationals! The US championships aren’t for a couple of  months. Now is a great time to let your hair down. One of the best ways to get away from the competitive zone is to sign up for a local holiday show. Lots of rinks put on shows this time of year and skating in one is a great way to kick off the holiday season.

I have to admit that I can’t believe I am jumping on the bandwagon and talking about Christmas before Thanksgiving, but some rinks are posting their sign up sheets now. It’s important to stay alert in order to not miss any deadlines.

Shows are a wonderful way to help a skater stay relaxed and have fun. With the demands of training a skater can sometimes forget why he/she started skating in the first place- because they enjoy it. Some coaches may push their skaters to put their hardest elements in their show program, but it’s not necessary. It actually kind of defeats the whole purpose of the show actually. Shows are no pressure situations that allow skaters to focus more on the performance aspect of their skating. So, if you still want to set a goal for yourself while performing in a show go right ahead. But maybe think in terms of setting a goal about how you will perform your program rather than about what jumps you will land. Anytime you are in front of an audience you are performing and working on those skills. Enjoy skating for the love of skating! An exhibition is another great way to show off  your skills. Hopefully, your rink schedules exhibitions throughout the year where you can skate your competition program. That is the time to try those difficult new elements. So enjoy yourself, you can always add a few extra skating hours over the Christmas break.

Have fun and “break a leg”.
